This article is going to be an in-depth and unbiased review of SEMrush. Before It, let’s discuss briefly Search Engine Marketing (SEM). Getting huge traffic on our blogs and websites is still a dream for many of us. But there are thousands of people who have achieved this goal. But how do they do so? Well, there are lots of ways to achieve good traffic from Search Engines. There used to be lots of tricks which worked to get huge traffic even for low-quality websites to rank higher in the previous years. But now as the search engines like Google become so smart, thanks to the artificial intelligence and more improvements in the Infomation Technology, only good sites with actual good work will be able to rank higher and get more traffic.
Getting traffic from a search engine is based on a simple principle, which most of us just discard. Write on, what people are actually searching for. You need to find keywords which people are searching on the web in huge volume and you just publish a good article about that topic on your blog and website (just make sure your content is better and useful than already published content), your chances of ranking higher for the keyword(s) increases.
This is the most basic principle of Search Engine Marketing. But how do you come to know about those keywords which people are actually searching for? That’s a big question for the beginners who are completely new in the world of how search engine and all this traffic flow works.
Likewise, there are many other principles and so-called tricks of ranking higher in the Search Engine. SEMrush is an amazing tool which can help you in all these principles and major aspects of Search Engine Marketing to grow traffic on your blogs and websites.
Introduction to SEMrush
SEMrush is a multi-purpose online Tool primarily used for Competitor Analysis. In the world of Search Engines, competitors play a very important role and make our job easy. As I mentioned, there are thousands of people who are getting lots of traffic on their blogs and websites from the search engine. We can analyze their websites, and can find out how they are getting traffic on their blogs and sites, and using this analysis, we can do similar things on our sites, and thus can consequently gain traffic ourselves from search engines.
SEMrush simply helps you to do that competitor analysis. SEMrush is a unique tool of its own kind. I couldn’t find any other exact tool which does similar things. And it is not just limited to competitor analysis or search engine marketing but also helps in social media marketing. As there are no hard competitors of SEMrush, there are also no cons. Therefore, this review is not Pros and Cons Based.
Still, this review has been divided into various sections for better understanding of the various aspects of this tool.
Better Organic & Competitor Analysis
This is definitely the most loved feature of SEMrush. You can do the analysis of just any domain on the internet which gets fairly enough traffic to show its visibility on Search Engine on a number of keywords.
SEMrush keeps the database of search engine rankings and that too country specific. In other words, SEMrush knows all those keywords and its details which any website is ranking for. It merges all that information and its compiled database and gives us meaningful and useful insights.
We’ll focus this review on a usage basis. Think of any website, which you think of to be your competitor. I have just randomly chosen wikipedia.org just to check its insights in the Search Engine.
You just have to enter your competitor’s domain name and have to choose the country in which you want to find out its search engine or more specifically Google Ranking insights. It will show you the data on traffic and rankings of that particular website in different ways.
You can clearly see in the screenshot it is showing the statistics for the domain, wikipedia.org and for the country, United States. You can see this domain gets 2.4 billion organic traffic from Google in the United States. SEMrush also ranks the different websites of the world according to the volume of their organic traffic and it is clear that Wikipedia has to be at rank #1 in SEMrush rankings as well.
Further, it also shows the PAID ads run for the particular domain and the number of backlinks with various useful insights like count if referring domains and IPs. All these numbers are estimated counts and not the actual count. The actual figures may vary a lot. All of these are the estimations come as output after algorithmic processing based on that data they have. Yes, I know, although these values are not 100% correct, they are fairly good to judge the condition of a website in Google.
Management metrics shows the average worldwide stats of a user visiting the website. Pages/Visit is the average number of pages a person visit when he or she comes to this website and likewise is the Average Visit duration, the time a person on an average spend on this site in one visit.
You can browse lots of other important metrics of this domain as well.
Organic Traffic Insights
This is the most important part where you get the most useful organic information, keywords and traffic trend data.
The Circular Graph Charts shows the distribution of keywords in different countries as per their data. As you can see the maximum keywords of Wikipedia are ranked in US, Canda, UK and so on. Likewise is the trend shown for PAID Keywords. The next graph in the right is a timeline based on historical search engine rankings.
You can see in the form of a timeline the traffic trend of a website. You can clearly see an increasing traffic trend in this case over time of years. The G symbols at the horizontal line of this graph show the various Google Updates occurred during this time period. SEMrush has such good tracking systems, that it can detect the major or minor changes in the search engine rankings to detect whether there is a search engine algorithm update or not. This is a piece of very useful information and can help you to save our website from major traffic drops.
In the bottom left of the above screenshot is the Organic Keyword Data and it is also the hotspot of this SEMrush tool. Most of the users are concerned with this section only. This section gives the most useful list, the list of organic keywords, the domain is getting the maximum traffic from. On this page, it is just showing you the Top 5 keywords from which this domain gets the maximum amount of traffic and it also shows what percentage of its overall organic traffic it gets from each of these listed keywords.
We’ll discuss this part in a later section of this article in a detailed way.
The bottom right part of the screenshot shows the Organic Position Distribution and this is also interesting information about the domain and its power in the Search Engine. As per the graph you can clearly see, most of the keywords of Wikipedia, rank in the first there positions, which is so true and there is a decreasing pattern in the further positions. This is the healthiest website type graph. You’ll find different position trends for a different website. If you find this type of trend, you can quickly guess this website has quite good authority in the search engine.
Competitive Positioning Analysis
The above screenshot shows the next section where you can find out the competitor domains of the searched domain. You can see Wikipedia has competitors like YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, Pinterest, etc. You can also see the common keywords between any of the competitor and the queried domain name. In the right, the traffic and organic keyword trends and volumes are graphically shown. Bigger the circle of the domain, more the organic traffic is. This is a quick way to compare the traffic volume of your domain name and your competitors as per the organic keywords.
There are further many things that you can extract from this graph. For example, you can check out the common keywords and make your content better for those websites to beat the competition.
Branded Vs Non-Branded Traffic Analysis
The section below simply shows the branded and non-branded traffic insights. If a visitor comes to your website just searching from a random keyword about which your website has the content, then it will be called as a non-branded visitor. He actually did not intend to visit your website but just comes up there as a result of his or her search in the Search Engine.
On the other hand, you want to chat with your friend on Facebook and you directly search for Facebook on Google to log in, and then this will be a Branded search as you search directly for the website, you actually intend to visit. Hope, you understood the difference between the Branded and Non-Branded Traffic likewise.
You can see in the above screenshot, the branded traffic is only around 14%, while the rest is all organic traffic. Organic Traffic is free, while it is seen that you have to pay a lot in the marketing of your brand, then after you get some brand value. Anyway, that’s a whole different aspect of marketing and does not come into the scope of this SEMrush review.
Paid Traffic Insights
As like the Organic Traffic Insights, competitive positioning, and competitor analysis, there are similar insights available for the PAID traffic in the search engine as well.
Backlinks play an important role in the search engine rankings and therefore, SEO is incomplete without backlinks. SEMrush also shows the backlink data and that too in depth.
If you are familiar with Backlinks, you might be knowing the fact that it is recommended for a website to have a certain ratio of Follow and No-Follow backlinks. You can track that ratio with SEMrush and likewise, you can find out the type of backlinks such as text links, frame links, form links, and Image Links.
There are a lot of backlinks tools available but each of them shows different stats and sometimes between the stats of different tools are so huge that it becomes difficult for you to judge which tool to choose. This catches lots of your time as well. The SEMrush Backlink analysis tool is fairly good and shows the right insights along with lots of other extra insights such as Referring IPs count as well.
Ads and Publisher Information
As I already mentioned apart from ORganic insights, it also shows PAID search engine traffic insights as well, there’s a section which shows information about the various textual and media ads running for the domain name.
So, this was all the information in brief, how SEMrush quickly shows you up some useful organic and competitor analysis about the given domain name.
Do More With SEMrush
We’ve briefly discussed the major insights in brief what SEMrush has to show you. But there’s a lot more what you can do with various sub-tools provided. Let’s find out.
SEMrush is popular because of this wonderful tool. This is also the most used part of SEMrush. Let’s understand with an example. Consider that you are a blogger who posts food recipes on a blog. You want to write recipes on your blog but have no idea on which recipes you will get the traffic.
- What you will do is just find out the domains of your competitors.
- Search on SERrush Organic Tool the domain name of your competitor(s).
- Grab the list of the keywords for which the domain is ranking and getting good traffic.
- Analyze the keyword difficulty.
- Sort the keywords as per difficulty to rank and as per your preference.
- Write better content for that keyword.
- Rank Higher and Get Good Traffic!
You found a recipes blog and you search it on SERrush. You find a list of keywords for which recipes that blog is ranking and you write posts about those recipes and start getting good traffic!
This is how SEMrush can help you. Mind that this is just to help you find the keywords, article content optimization and SEO (Search Engine Optimizations) is all your efforts!
In the above screenshot, you can see the few Top keywords for which Wikipedia is ranking for and on what position with other useful insights like Positions Changes, Current and Historical Position difference, Traffic Percentage, Traffic Volume, Keyword Difficulty (We’ll discuss this in a later section as it’s a very useful thing), CPC (Cost Per Click), URL, SERP and data update date.
You can manage the columns of this table as per your preference using the Manage Columns option given at the Top Right above this table. There’s one more option which all of you will like is the Export Option. You can export the Organic Research Data or any other tool data of SEMrush into Excel Sheets or CSV Format. This gives you the flexibility of analysis and doing more with the data at a later stage when you are offline and not actually using the SEMrush tool.
There are various aspects under this tool, which can be useful for you such as Position Changes Tracker, Competitor Based Organic Keyword Research, Organic Traffic Analysis on the basis of website Pages and Sub-domains. If I started explaining about each of this topic, it’s going to an endless talk.
Keyword Research & Keyword Magic Tool
Like Domain-based Organic Research, you can also do the research with Keywords itself. Do you have a keyword in your mind? Just Search it in SEMrush Keyword Research Tool and you’ll get the useful insights that you actually need.
You can see in the above screenshot, I’ve queried the keyword, web hosting in the Keyword Magic Tool.
Apart from the Total Volume of this keyword and verge difficult, it is also showing me the most related and useful keywords related to the original queried keyword. Apart from this, it is also showing various single related words. Keyword Difficulty is also calculated for each keyword.
Keyword Difficulty Analysis
This is an amazing feature in the Keywords Analysis and Organic Research Tool of SEMrush. There are two keywords with similar traffic volumes and you’re asked to choose one keyword to write an article and challenged to rank for.
Obviously, you’ll choose the keyword which will be easy to rank for. But how will you decide which keyword is easy to rank or not? At the first insight, both of them might be similar!
Here you can take advantage of Keyword Difficulty Score (KD) calculated by SEMrush. There are various factors on which the difficulty of the ranking of a particular keyword matters. SEO Experts knows much about those factors. But you need not bother about those factors as SEMrush algorithms calculate this score for you on the basis of which you can quickly judge which keyword is easy to rank and which is difficult.
KD is simply a score on the scale of 0 to 100. Less the KD Score, it’ll be easier to rank for the keyword.
You can also enter your very own list of keywords, to check difficulty.
Another great feature offered by SEMrush to reduce your efforts of competitor analysis is Domain Vs Domain comparison. You can compare the insights of multiple domain names to get useful data.

Topic Research Tool
When we have a topic in mind, but we don’t know what to write about that topic, it’s actually a tough condition. With SEMrush, we can find out various keywords easily but when it comes to writing good content about that topic, it really becomes a tough job.
SEMrush has a solution for that as well. Topic Research Tool helps you to generate ideas about the content.
For example, I’ve searched the topic, Web Hosting in the Topic Research Tool and it has researched for some, some of the great ideas using which I can write good content.
Just Imagine, previously, you just have a topic in mind, and now you have each and everything that you could include in your content as a sub-heading and overall writeup.

SEMrush will cost you $83.28 per month if you subscribe annually. The price is actually high but it is worth the features that you get with it. The monthly subscription will cost you more, that’s why the annual subscription is the recommendation.
But you should actually try the tool before subscribing to them. SEMrush offer free trial of 7 days. You can cancel the subscription before 7 days to avoid any charge.

SEMrush has numerous features and it is not possible for us to review all of them in this one article but still we’ve tried to cover the major features and tools. Without any doubts, it is such an amazing tool and for a Search Engine Marketing, it is a kind of must-have tool. SEMrush makes competitor analysis so easy. Even I could not find any con in this tool. Each and every feature offered in SEMrush will simply attract you even more towards it.
Also, you need not always to be there Online on SEMrush to analyze the data. You can export the data on your local PC and analyze it as per your preference. Just ask this question to yourself, which other tool offers so many features under one tool?
