Getting Started With Google Keyword Planner

It’s easy to get started with Google Keyword Planner. You just need to have a Google Account in which further you’ve to set up Google Ads account. If you don’t have a Google Account, you can create one for Free.

Next, go the Google Keyword Planner Page and sign in with your Google Account.

If you already have a Google Ads Account setup completed, you’ll be directly redirected to the Keyword Planner page, otherwise, you’ll be first asked to set up the Google Ads. Setting up Google Ads is also quick and easy and won’t take more than a minute or two. You can also open the Keyword Planner page by searching in the Top Search Bar provided at every page of Google Ads in the Header Menu Section.

This following screenshot shows up the First Page of the Google Keyword Planner, which simply asks you to choose any of the two options.

Options - Discover Keywords & Get Search Volumes Or Forcasts

  • The first option is to Discover New Keywords, it lets you find out new keywords with the help of existing keyword or website URLs. This is the major functionality of the Keyword Planner.
  • The section option is Get Search Volume and Forecasts. It is useful when you just want to find out the search volume and future trends of those search volumes for a pre-defined set of keywords.

Further, under the Discover New Keyword option, you get two Sub-Options.

Keywords Specific Research

  • Start With Keywords
  • Start With Website

Both are cool and useful. Let’s understand the usage of both of these options.

How to Use Google Keyword Planner For Keyword Research?

To get started with the Keyword Search, you first have to keep those keywords or websites in mind which are relevant and related to the audience and traffic that you want to target for your website.

Let’s say I want to find out some keywords on which I can write articles on my blog. I want those keyword targeted articles for Smartphones Category of my Technology blog. So, in that case, the search for Google Keyword Planner will be as shown in the following screenshot.

You have to enter one or more keywords in the field labeled as Enter Products or Services closely Related to your Business.

As you can see, I just typed the keyword, smartphones, you can choose any closely related keyword as per your research. You can add more keywords as per your requirement.

Simply, after this, by clicking on the Get Results button, the Google Keyword Planner will find out some of the related keywords ideas to your queried keyword(s).

The various items in the above screenshot are labeled with numbers and the explanation for each of the label is given below.

1. Location

You can specify here one or more location for which want to get the search results. In this case, the location is set to just one country, India. You can set it to other countries, even you can choose cities or states as well.

Simply when you’ll click on the Location option, a box will open and here you enter all the locations that you want to include for the current search.

2. Language

People from different countries and regions search in different languages. Therefore, it’s important to set the language as per the language of the website for which you want to find out the keywords. Click on the Language option and choose the language from the list.

3. Search Networks

This option lets you choose whether you want the keywords data as only searched on Google or Google and its search partners. The second option will also include the data from the search partners of Google. You can set this option completely as per your preference.

4. Time Period

This is an important option and it is by the default set of Last 12 months. The default setting is the best option to choose here. The result and keyword data are shown according to the analysis of search volumes and trends in this duration of time.

5. Download Keyword Ideas

This option lets you download the keyword ideas and data in CSV format. You just need to click on this option and after it, it will take a second to prepare the report and the CSV file will be downloaded automatically to your computer.

6. Trend Graphs

By default, this option is set to Search Volume Trends. It shows graphically, how the search volume data for the overall keyword ideas in the given time period. You can choose to view the graphical representation for the search volume, breakdown by platforms and locations as well.

7. Average Monthly Searches

It is the most exciting factor in the Google Keyword Research Tool. Corresponding to each of the Keyword, it shows up the Average Monthly Searches. Make sure this figure is calculated after taking into account the period of time you selected for the search. Obviously, everybody wants to know which keywords people are searching the most and therefore, this tool can help you to find out the high search volume keywords. But don’t just blindly start targeting high volume keywords. It won’t give you results because there are already many competitors who’re trying to rank for high search volume keywords.

Therefore, competition for Keywords with High Search Volume is Usually High. You should find those keywords with good search volume as well as the competition that you feel that your website is able to beat.

The competition that is mentioned here is not the competition, which I am talking about. It is the competition level for advertisers. I’m talking about the Organic Search Competition. A lot of third-party tools like SEMrush Keyword Research Tool can help you find out that Keyword specific competition.

Note: You may not be seeing the Exact Search Volume (Like 2,100) the Keyword Planner Tool of your Google Ads account. Instead, some of the users may be shown in the Search Volume Range (Like 100-1000). A lot of new users of Google Ads could not find the reason why. The reason being, this tool shows up the Exact Search Volume only to those users who have started campaigns on Google Ads. Previously, this tool shows exact search volume to everybody (Around 2 years ago).

8. Keyword Ideas & Filters

Finally, the thing which matters the most, the Keywords. From this list of keywords, you can choose those, which seems to be perfect to write content on your website and to target by understanding the statistics of competition and search volume. The total number of keyword ideas that it has found for you is clearly mentioned on the search page and the pagination option is given at the bottom of the page. You can browse the whole data of Keywords using the provided pagination options.

The filter option given above the data table can help you sort the best keyword for you. You can filter the keyword by the options provided in the Filter List as shown in the screenshot given above.

9. Domain Name Filteration

In the above search, we did the keyword research by using the Start With Keyword option, now let’s do the Keyword Research specific to websites.

You can also specify the URL of the website in the first option as you can see in the screenshot given below.

This will suggest you the Keyword Ideas for the provided keywords but keeping the provided domain as a filtration option. This helps in competitor analysis. In other words, this will help you to find out those keywords for which the domain name you have entered is already ranking at some position.

Getting Search Volume & Forecast in Keyword Planner

Sometimes, in Keyword Research, you may just want to get the Search Volume of the given set of keywords and also the forecasts that tell how the volume of search is going to behave in the future. Then the Get Seach Volume & Forecast option of Google Keyword Planner may help.

Click on the Get search volume and forecasts option. You’re asked to enter the keywords You’ve to enter the keywords in the text area provided. Enter one keyword in each line or you can also enter the keywords, separated by commas.

The option to upload a keywords file is also provided. Two templates are provided, the Keywords Template and the Plan Template. You can download any of these templates as per your search requirement.

Both are CSV files with header columns which you’ve to fill as per the search. In the Keyword CSV file, there is only one column named as Keyword. Under this column, in each row, you can enter keywords, one keyword each cell, each row and can upload it back to perform the search.
